The RESIDENT ASSISTANT lives in the ABC dorm/house with 8-10 scholars and other residence staff and oversees the daily life of the scholars including all dormitory-related and many academic-related activities. Two or three Resident Assistants work as a team with the Resident Director to provide a supportive, structured, family style atmosphere that promotes excellence in all areas of the scholar’s lives.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Attend family style dinners and supervise study hours (7:00-9:45) 1-2 nights per week
  • Maintain an environment conducive to studying while promoting proper study habits
  • Tutor in subjects of Math, English, Foreign Language, History and Science, as needed
  • Understand homework assignments and ensure that they are completed and handed in on time
  • Track the academic and social progress of scholars and work closely with the Resident Director, Academic Committee, and AHS liaison to assess individual scholar’s academic and social progress and develop action plans as necessary.
  • Promote a culture of respect, mutual support, accountability, tolerance, service, compassion, and social and academic excellence.
  • Oversee the organization and ongoing operation of the house including chores and house maintenance issues as they arise. Apprise RD as necessary.
  • Know and enforce specific ABC guidelines in the areas of academics, house rules and disciplinary action. Conduct scheduled room and house inspections.
  • Establish informal and ongoing communication with other staff and attend formal staff meetings with RD.
  • Attend ABC functions throughout the year as requested by ABC Board.
  • The Resident Assistants are expected to model appropriately mature behavior and by the actions of their daily lives, help students learn how to communicate effectively and navigate relationships with teachers, program staff, peers and other community members in a constructive, respectful manner.


  • Room and board: Housing in the dormitory near downtown Andover, board of four dinners a week prepared by the Cook, utilities, telecommunications, and parking.
  • Off–duty from ABC during school hours, school vacations, summers, holidays and rotating weekends (the Resident Director may hold a job or attend school during off hours).

The successful candidate will:

  • Possess a Bachelor’s degree and a track record of demonstrated success working with high school talented youth (preferably female students)
  • Foster an environment of academic achievement
  • Have experience in teaching or tutoring experience in one or more high school subjects: Math, English, Science, or Foreign Language
  • Demonstrate an ability to exercise authority and maintain discipline with compassion and consistency with a close dormitory living situation
  • Possess maturity, leadership, good judgment, strong communication and decision-making skills, a sense of humor, a collaborative nature, enthusiasm, flexibility, and a strong desire to help young women of color succeed
